Thesis resume
In a nuclear reactor, the cladding tube, which surrounds the fuel pellets, constitutes the first confinement barrier for radioactive products. Under irradiation, the pellets deform, which can cause mechanical stress on the clad and cause it to break. In order to guarantee the integrity of this barrier and the safety of the reactor, it is necessary to know the operating conditions not to be exceeded. To fully understand these conditions, fuel power ramp tests are conducted using fuel irradiation devices in Material Testing Reactors (MTRs) to acquire experimental data and improve our knowledge of the pellet-cladding interaction.
The Jules Horowitz Reactor (JHR) is an MTR under construction on the CEA Cadarache site. The design of the JHR took into account feedback from OSIRIS, a former MTR already shut down. For fuel irradiation devices, the CEA is endeavoring to transfer the knowledge developed for the ISABELLE1 mobile device in OSIRIS to the ADELINE mobile device in the JHR, both dedicated to power ramps. Numerical modeling is an essential tool for such a transfer.
The objective of this thesis consists in developing a neutronic and thermohydraulic modeling allowing guaranteeing the control of the ADELINE device in the JHR.
The scientific approach begins with the update of the modeling of the online measurements making it possible to control the irradiation conditions of the ISABELLE device, using the new generation of simulation tools such as the Monte-Carlo code TRIPOLI-4® and the thermal code REFLET. TRIPOLI-4® also models pre-irradiation measurement by calorimeter. This new modeling is validated by the reproduction and reinterpretation of the ETALISA experiment conducted in ISABELLE.
Then, a typical configuration of the JHR in an operating cycle is studied in order to determine an experimental window for a ramp, by privileging the irradiation conditions in the ADELINE device. The results show that the most favorable moment for such a ramp is in the middle of the cycle with asymmetric piloting of the reactor in tilted mode, making it possible to obtain a privileged side for the neutron flux.
Finally, the modeling is applied to ADELINE in tilted mode in the favorable window. The results allow us to conclude that there is satisfactory control of the irradiation conditions, in particular the linear heating generation rate to within 5% at 2σ.
This work makes it possible to prepare for the start of the JHR experiments by ensuring the expected performance in the ADELINE device. Similar work could be carried out on other devices, taking into account their internal instrumentation.
