Thesis resume
The classroom is an artifactual component (Rabardel 1995) of school architecture (Baudin, 1907; Kaestle, 1973; Chatelet, 2004), a pivotal instrument (Bourmaud 2006) of the organizational system of instruments (Munoz, Bourmaud 2012) of the teacher. A place of education intended for the use of the teacher, it was systematized from the 19th century to allow the generalization of public education (Guizot Law 1830, Ferry Law 1881) throughout France. Its shape, dimensions and spatial qualities were locked to the principles retained by the first theories of educational institution (Betancourt, 1654; Demia, 1668; La Salle, 1702; Lauraire, 2006; Faillet, 2017). Thus, the place of education, determined and built according to a political project (Jahan, Leclair, 2010), would be reproducible and transposable on the basis of a secular educational theory. However, taking into account the conditions of the child (Law Dupin 1840; Law Falloux 1850; Lemercier, 2006; Becquemin, Chauviere, 2013), the evolution of learning conditions (Montessori, 1910; Freinet, 1946), the emergence of so-called innovative pedagogies (Mialaret 1991; Meirieu 1993; Durand 1996; Connac, 2016; Tricot, 2017), and the digitization of teaching tools (Endrizzi, 2012), could all be factors in modifying the contemporary school architectural form. In this study, we consider the classroom as an artifact (Vygotsky, 1985; Rabardel, 1995; Schmidt, Wagner, 2003; Guéry, 2003; Guilheux, 2007; Brandt-Pomares, 2013) containing (Durand, 2008) whose architectural structures properties serve the implementation of the teacher's pedagogical project. If we consider that the attentive instrumentalization (Vygotsky, 1930/1995; Voss, Prieto 1976; Astolfi, 1993; Goigoux, 2007) (Gibson, 1979/1986; Ingold, 2018) of the artifact is a factor in the pedagogical diversification of the teacher, why do we observe a permanence of the forms of the professional artifact? Since the containing artifact has been systematized in the 19th century, we assume that the teacher already uses, in his practice, the projection of the arrangement of the containing artefact for the implementation of an educational project. Thus, by mastering the instrumental approach of the containing artefict, the teacher would quickly appropriate it when suitable for the educational project. We can consider that the teacher would know how to conceptualize the project of development of the classroom in order to serve the diversification of his professional practice. We have, within the framework of a school, made an artefact containing (Reed, 1993; Reed, Bril, 1996; Recopé, 2001; Durand 2008) to propose observable situations, to act as teachers during their instrumental approach. We look here, under the triple gaze of architecture, educational sciences and anthropology, at bodies (Zumthor, 2008; Barthe, Deloizy, 2011; Chramette, 2013; Eres, 2015) and postures (Bucheton, Soulé, 2009) of teachers in their teaching environment. We have identified, thanks to the design of a participatory research method, framed by the characteristics established in design based research (Baumgartner, et al., 2003) in a short-term project (Pool, Laubscher, 2016), the variables to be considered for the implementation of an instrumental approach attentive to the containing artefact.
