Thesis resume
This thesis investigated the informational basis of the control of human locomotor interception behavior from a behavioral dynamics point of view, using Qualitative Inconsistency Detection (QuID) a novel trial-by-trial analysis method to analyze the explanatory power of candidate informational variables. In three experiments we explored velocity-constrained locomotor interception of non-uniformly moving targets. Participants in our virtual reality based interception-by-steering task were to intercept targets moving in the horizontal plane, either along curvilinear trajectories at a constant speed, or along rectilinear trajectories at a non-constant speed with constant acceleration (opposite to the initial movement direction). Contrary to conventional tenets, application of the QuID method demonstrated that steering behavior could not be adequately understood as resulting from nulling the first-order time derivative of either the target-heading angle or the targets bearing angle . In-depth analysis of over 6000 individual trials revealed that operation of d/dt nulling was viable in the early phase (i.e., the first second) of the interceptive action, while later stages required a combination of d/dt and d2/dt2 nulling. Overall, we conclude that locomotor interception of non-uniformly moving targets cannot be adequately captured by any of the traditional interception strategies, based on categorical differences in (i) the particular angle considered ( or ) and (ii) its particular integer-order time derivative. We suggest that such locomotor interception behavior is guided by information in the form of a fractional-order time derivative (dα/dtα) with 1 < α < 2.
