ED352 - Course 'Irradiation and Material Damage', Régis BISSON

There are two objectives. First, to understand the elementary mechanisms that bring damage in a material impacted by fast particles. Then, by understanding these mechanisms, one can use fast particles to: 1. analyze the composition and structure of a material, 2. modify materials to create new properties, 3. anticipate modification of materials submitted to extreme conditions

The lecture is in 6 parts. Part A: why understanding materials irradiation is technologically important? Part B: fundamental aspects of fast particles - material interaction. Part C: the eV range - (binding) potentials and energy-losses. Part D: the keV range - stopping range and displacement damage. Part E: the MeV range - thermal spike and nuclear transmutation. Part F: analytical and technological applications.

Physics at the Bachelor level (forces, potentials, collisions, dissipation…)

Students will know: 1. how to evaluate the time constant for energy dissipation, 2. where dissipated energy goes and the influence on the trajectory of the irradiating particle, 3. Families of potentials and methods to calculate damage creation, 4. how to use the freeware SRIM to determine implantation profile and quantify created damage in materials, 5. how to predict the effect of a change of mass and/or energy of an irradiating particle onto damage creation in a material
