Cette thèse porte sur les cohabitations quotidiennes entre habitants de trois quartiers en cours de gentrification dans les villes de Berlin, Palerme et Marseille. Ce processus est saisi comme cadre d’interactions spécifiques, marqué par les compétitions pour l’espace local entre habitants aux ressources inégales, confrontés à une proximité spatiale inédite. Comment s'articulent les transformations de l'espace résidentiel d'une part et des espaces publics d'autre part, au sein de ces quartiers en transformation ? Quels sont les modalités et les enjeux des cohabitations entre individus aux caractéristiques sociales et aux « manières d'habiter » très diverses, et que nous apprennent-elles des (dés)appropriations locales ? Quels sont les effets de ces cohabitations sur les pratiques et les représentations citadines comme sur les trajectoires résidentielles des habitants, et donc, in fine, sur les recompositions socio-spatiales de ces quartiers ? C’est à ces questionnements qu’entend répondre cette thèse, fondée sur des enquêtes ethnographiques conduites entre 2012 à 2018. Les retours sur les terrains berlinois et palermitains, à plusieurs années d’intervalles, ont permis de saisir les fluctuations des ressources mobilisées par les uns et par les autres, ainsi que les redéfinitions des groupes sociaux comme des positions sociales et symboliques induites par ces cohabitations souvent tendues ou conflictuelles. Il s'agira au final de rompre avec une catégorisation rigide des acteurs et des processus de dominations dans de tels contextes de gentrification, pour en montrer la complexité et le dynamisme, tout en soulignant les compétences des habitants de ces quartiers, à même de réajuster voire de freiner, de façons différenciées selon les contextes, les logiques ségrégatives induites par les politiques de revalorisation des centres urbains.

This thesis focuses on the daily cohabitations between residents of three neighborhoods undergoing gentrification in the cities of Berlin, Palermo and Marseille. This process is understood as a framework for specific interactions, marked by competitions for local space between inhabitants with unequal resources, confronted with an unprecedented spatial proximity. How are the transformations of the residential space on the one hand and the public spaces on the other hand, articulated within these neighborhoods in transformation? What are the modalities and challenges of cohabitation between individuals with very diverse social characteristics and “ways of living”, and what do they teach us from local (dis)appropriations? What are the effects of these cohabitations on urban practices and representations as well as on the residential trajectories of the inhabitants, and thus, ultimately, on the socio-spatial recompositions of these neighbourhoods? It is to these questions that this thesis, based on ethnographic surveys conducted between 2012 and 2018, intends to respond. Returns to Berlin and Palermo, at intervals of several years, have made it possible to grasp the fluctuations of the resources mobilized by each other, and the redefinition of social groups as social and symbolic positions induced by these often tense or conflicting cohabitations. In the end, it will be a question of breaking with a rigid categorization of actors and processes of domination in such contexts of gentrification, to show their complexity and dynamism, while emphasizing the skills of the inhabitants of these neighborhoods, able to readjust even to curb, in different ways depending on the context, the segregation logics induced by the policies of revalorization of urban centers.
