The doctoral schools (DS) are accredited by the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research following an evaluation by the High Council for Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (HCERES). They bring together research units and teams from one or more higher education and research institutions, recognised following an evaluation carried out by HCERES or other bodies.

The AMU's DSs have internal rules of procedure that define their role, missions and functioning. Each DS is headed by a director, assisted by an administrative manager and a board.
